Chelsea wanted him. Sunderland said no. And if the reports are to be believed, Granit Xhaka is perfectly happy with that outcome.
The 32-year-old Swiss midfielder, who joined Sunderland on a two-year deal last summer after his decade-long stint at Arsenal, has apparently caught the eye of Chelsea’s recruitment team ahead of the upcoming transfer window. It’s the kind of interest that would have most players’ heads turning. But according to sources close to the club, Xhaka isn’t going anywhere.
Sunderland, still riding the momentum of their return to the Premier League, are determined to keep hold of one of their most influential players. The club view Xhaka not just as a midfielder, but as a leader, a presence in the dressing room who steadies the ship when the going gets difficult. That sort of thing doesn’t have a price tag, or at least not one the Stadium of Light hierarchy is willing to entertain.
“He’s been exactly what we needed,” one club insider reportedly told a national outlet this week. “The lads look to him. You don’t replace that in a summer window.”
For Chelsea, the logic is understandable. Enzo Maresca is still trying to find the right balance in midfield, and Xhaka’s reading of the game and relentless pressing would fit the system well. He averaged 4.3 ball recoveries per 90 minutes last season, one of the better numbers in his position across the division.
But Xhaka himself seems settled in the North East. By all accounts he’s embraced the city, bought into the project, and has spoken privately about wanting to finish his career somewhere he feels genuinely valued. That’s a long way from the Arsenal years, when boos from the Emirates faithful once pushed him to the edge of leaving London altogether.
Sunderland have until the window closes to fend off any formal approach, should Chelsea push harder than whispers. The Black Cats will be hoping loyalty holds. Whether a concrete bid changes the conversation is a question that could define their entire summer.
