Ludwig series 2 first look revealed as comedy detective series with David Mitchell and Anna Maxwell Martin returns

It’s back, and honestly, it never really left our hearts. The BBC’s surprise comedy hit Ludwig is returning for a second series, and the first look images confirm it’s bringing every bit of the same gloriously awkward energy that made series one such a joy.

David Mitchell returns as John, the reclusive puzzle setter who spent series one reluctantly impersonating his detective twin brother. Anna Maxwell Martin is back alongside him as DCI Carla Lane, and if the first look stills are anything to go by, the two haven’t lost a single beat of their wonderfully odd chemistry.

The original series landed on BBC One last autumn and pulled in some seriously impressive numbers, regularly topping the weekly ratings and becoming one of those rare things: a proper watercooler drama that didn’t require anyone to suffer through relentless misery to enjoy it. It was funny, sharp, and genuinely clever without ever feeling smug about it.

Mitchell himself has spoken about why he thinks the show connected so well with audiences. The character of John, socially paralysed yet quietly brilliant, struck a chord with viewers who perhaps recognised a little of themselves in someone who’d rather solve a cryptic crossword than make eye contact with a stranger.

“There’s something very freeing about playing someone who’s catastrophically bad at being normal,” Mitchell has said of the role, and it shows. His performance in series one was a masterclass in understated comic timing.

Maxwell Martin, for her part, brings the kind of grounded warmth that stops the whole thing tipping into pure farce. Her Lane is competent, occasionally exasperated, and deeply human. The two balance each other out beautifully.

Production on series two is well underway, with the show filming across its familiar locations. The BBC hasn’t confirmed an exact broadcast date yet, though late 2025 seems the most likely window given where filming currently stands.

What the new series will throw at John, and whether he’s any better at pretending to be a functioning member of society, remains to be seen. Given how series one left things, though, it’s a safe bet the puzzles are going to get considerably harder before they get easier.
